Thyroid Problems (Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism) from The Patients Voice

Treatments

Thyroid pathologies can easily be treated in the vast majority of cases.
Treatments can be temporary (hormone supplements) or permanent (surgical removal of the thyroid or parts of it).

Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism require life-long treatments and are thus defined as chronic conditions.
The treatment of hyperthyroidism involves a temporary use of suppressive thyrostatic medication, consisting of an oral medication to be taken once a day.

This slows down the hyper-functioning of the thyroid gland by suppressing the production of thyroid hormones.
As a result of the treatment, hypothyroidism may sometimes develop and it can be treated with hormone supplements.

In severe cases, a surgical removal of the thyroid may be necessary. Patients who have had their thyroid removed must take a hormone supplement for the rest of their lives.

The treatment of hypothyroidism consists of oral supplements of thyroid hormone to be taken once a day and it is usually taken permanently. The most commonly employed hormone is called levothyroxine. This hormone does not usually give allergic reactions; it can however interact with other medications and food supplements.
Therefore, it is important that patients always check with a doctor the possibility of interactions.
