A rarer condition is the so-called thyroid storm which often develops as a consequence of a stroke, injury, infection or untreated hyperthyroidism.
Symptoms of a thyroid storm may include: fever, jaundice (yellow skin), very fast heartbeat, dehydration, agitation, confusion and hallucinations. It always requires urgent treatment as it can lead to coma.
It is typically treated with intravenous beta blockers and steroids.
