Thyroid Problems (Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism) from The Patients Voice

Welcome

Welcome to The Patients Voice web site which looks at the different kinds of thyroid problems which affect our members.

As background, the thyroid is a two-lobed endocrine gland which is located at the base of the neck.
The thyroid secretes different hormones (principally thyroxin and triiodothyronine) that regulate the rates of metabolism, growth and development. The thyroid also produces the hormone calcitonin.

There are two main medical conditions associated with the thyroid gland:-Hyperthyroidism (or overactive thyroid) is a condition which occurs when there is an excessive production of thyroid hormone. This pathology is more common amongst women than men.Hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid) when the thyroid gland fails to produce or secrete thyroid hormones.

This site will lead you through the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of these two thyroid problems.

We will also briefly look at the advanced form of hypothyroidism called Thyroid Storm and thyroiditis which is the inflammation of the thyroid gland.

The Patients Voice is a community of patients and their caregivers who regularly air their opinions about medical matters by taking part in market research.
